ChatGPT Introduces Tasks: A Step Toward AI Personal Assistants
OpenAI has launched a new beta feature for ChatGPT called “Tasks,” allowing paying users to schedule reminders and recurring actions. Available to Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers, Tasks enables users to set one-time alerts, such as passport renewal reminders, or recurring updates like daily news briefings or weekly plans based on weather forecasts.
The feature represents OpenAI’s initial move toward agentic AI, where systems act semi-independently. Users can manage tasks through a dedicated section in the web app or directly in chat, with notifications sent across devices. However, the feature currently limits users to 10 active tasks and does not support continuous background actions like real-time alerts or purchases.
OpenAI plans to refine Tasks during the beta phase before expanding access. This development marks a significant step in transforming ChatGPT from a reactive chatbot into a proactive digital assistant.
