AI Reduces Cataract Surgery Wait Times in the NHS
Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing a pivotal role in reducing wait times for cataract surgeries across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The NHS has introduced Dora, an AI-powered automated voice system developed in Oxford, which contacts patients to ask important questions and determine who needs further attention from clinicians.
In January 2024, the wait times for cataract surgery were as long as 35 weeks. However, by 2025, the NHS aims to reduce these wait times to 10 weeks or less, thanks to Dora. The system has already received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with 92% of patients surveyed expressing high satisfaction with their experience.
Aris Konstantopoulos, a consultant ophthalmologist and clinical lead at NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight, highlighted that Dora has helped free up valuable time for nursing teams to focus on more surgical tasks. Dora handles the phone calls and administrative work, allowing the staff to concentrate on patient care and surgery.
The AI tool has not only streamlined the process but has also made it easier for patients to navigate their treatment. Dora interacts with patients, understands their questions, and provides them with clear information, enhancing the overall patient experience.
